i actually do kinda like delivering groceries on the side because it gives me such a unique cross-section of the community. i never know whose groceries im shopping for until i finish the delivery and see them/their home and it’s like it adds more detail to the picture of who they are. the baby supplies going to the apartment that i know for a fact is one bedroom (they’ll be moving soon - i bet they’re apartment hunting, i hope they find a place). the new cat litter box, bowl, and kitten food going to the house covered in “i <3 my dog” paraphernalia (a kitten definitely showed up on the porch recently and made itself at home). the fairly healthy boring grocery order that includes an incongruous tub of candy-filled ice cream going to the home of an elderly woman with toddler toys in the yard (it’s clearly for her grandkids, whom she sees often).

shopping for someone else’s groceries is a fairly intimate thing. i’ve bought condoms and pregnancy tests, allergy medicine and nyquil, baby benadryl and teething gel, a huge pile of veggies paired with an equally huge pile of junk food, tampons and shampoo and closet organizers and ant traps and deodorizing shoe inserts and a million other little things that tell a million different stories in their endless combinations. one time someone had me buy one single green bean. i messaged them to confirm that’s actually what they wanted, and they said yes - neither of them liked green beans very much, but they had a baby they were introducing to solid foods, and they wanted to let him try one to see if he liked them. another time i had someone request 50 fresh roma tomatoes - not for a restaurant, but for a person in an apartment. the kitchen behind them smelled like basil and garlic when they opened the door. another time i brought groceries to three elderly blind women who share a house. that was one of the few times i have ever broken my rule and gone inside a place i’ve delivered to, because they asked if i could place the grocery bags in a specific location in the kitchen for them to work on unloading and there was no way i was going to refuse helping.

i gripe about the poor tippers, but people can also be incredibly kind. one time i took shelter from a sudden vicious hailstorm inside an older lady’s home in a trailer park, while i was in the middle of delivering her groceries. we both huddled just inside the door, watching in shock as golf-ball-sized hail swept through for about five minutes and then disappeared. she handed me an extra $10 bill on my way out the door.

when covid was at its deadliest, people would leave extra (often lysol-scented) cash tips and thank-you notes for me taped to the door or partially under the mat. i especially loved the clearly kid-drawn thank you notes with marker renderings of blobby people in masks, or trees, or rainbows. in summer of 2020 i delivered to a nice older couple who lived outside of town in the hills, and they insisted i take a huge double handful of extra disposable gloves and masks to wear while shopping - those were hard to find in stores at the time, but they wanted me to have some of their supply and wouldn’t take no for an answer.

anyway. all this to say people are mostly good, or at least trying to be, despite my complaints.

Lmao one of Google’s witnesses fucked up and leaked the exact percentage of Google’s revenue that it shares with Apple in exchange for default search enginge status, a number that has remained redacted up until now

I cannot stress enough that he DID NOT HAVE TO tell the world the Google shares

36

Goddamn

Percent

of its revenue with Apple in order to maintain default search engine status

Since we know that Google paid Apple $26.3 billion in 2021 to be the default search engine on Apple products, that means Google made 73 BILLION DOLL-HAIRS from its default placement agreement with Apple ALONE, which is more than 1/3 of its total search engine ad revenue, which as you can imagine is a huge part of its overall revenue

The same guy also tried to argue that monopolies are somehow good for competition. He didn’t even deny that Google has one. Said they should be allowed to expand it, even. You can’t make this shit up lmao

*slaps Adam Smith’s Wealth of nations on the table* MONOPOLIES! ARE! BAD! Heck, it means if you know that part alone, you are more qualified than that guy to lead Google!

I don’t think we’re rick rolling each other enough anymore. 1. it CANNOT die out 2. this under saturated market is perfect for unsuspecting victims who’ve been lulled into a false sense of security. be the person you hate. bring back the dastardly link

someone actually studied the falling Rick Roll rate for their Ph.D dissertation recently and published the paper

okay but this made me wonder if there was actually any academic literature on rickrolling and YES THERE IS this is a paper about rickrolling WITHIN academic literature. As in, studies that attempt to rickroll the people reading them. Best part is no one is going to believe me and click that link even though it’s 100% true.

🗣️ This is for all new internet connected cars

image

A new study has found that your car likely knows more about you than your mom. That is disconcerting, but what’s even more so is what is being done with your information. It’s all about the Benjamins. Our private information is being collected and sold.

The Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit that studies internet and privacy issues, studied 25 car manufacturers. And it found every manufacturer sold in America poses a greater risk to your privacy than any device, app or social media platform.

Our cars are rolling computers, many of which are connected to the internet collecting information about how you drive and where. New cars also have microphones and sensors that give you safety features like automatic braking and drowsy driver detection. Those systems are also providing information. Got GPS or satellite radio? Then your car likely knows your habits, musical and political preferences.

Did you download your car’s app which gives you access to even more features? Well that also gives your car access to your phone and all the information on it.

The study found that of the 25 car brands, 84% say they sell your personal data.

And what they collect is astounding.

One example the study sites is KIA’s privacy policy. It indicates the company collects information about your sexual activity. I initially didn’t believe it until I pulled KIA’s privacy policy and read it. And it’s right there in black and white. It says it collects information about your “ethnicity, religious, philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation, sex life, or political opinions.

image

And it says it can keep your info for “as long as is necessary for the legitimate business purpose set out in this privacy notice.”

Translation: Nissan can keep your information as long as they want to. And more than half of the manufacturers (56%) say they will share your information with law enforcement if asked.

Wow, sounds like afab people traveling for healthcare (ahem) would do well to look for an old car to do their road trip in. Or at the very least travel in someone else’s car with a burner phone not connected to the console.

The face of a woman regretting the music lessons.

This is fairly close to the relationship I had with my mom.

i love those little moments where her face lights up because the joy of the joke far outweighs how sick of it she is. like the moment with the star wars music? *chef’s kiss*

They are both clearly having SO much fun, I love this

Things I allow myself now that I know I am autistic:

  • Stimming (basically 24/7)
  • Have days on which I do nothing, just stim & engage with my special interests
  • Say what I mean & don’t try read between the lines anymore (really, overanalysing costs SO MUCH brain energy, not worth it)
  • Just cry
  • Struggle (grocery shopping, driving, adult things) & recognize that my feelings of guilt associated with the struggle are my inner ableism & the expectations that have been imprinted on my brain & that it’s okay to be not ready to let go of that guilt yet
